Field Trips

Field trips are open to all members. Space permitting, guests may also join. We attempt to describe the difficulty of the trip. Some trips are "drive-ups", "walkups", and some are "serious camping". When using your vehicle, be sure it is in good working order. It could be dangerous if your are stuck in the desert without adequate water, food, or tools for repair.

Participants must be familiar with Field Trip Policies and sign a Release of Liability before participating in any trip. The Field Trip Leader has the right to exclude you for failure to follow policy or fail to sign the Release of Liability.

Skelton Ranch

Leader:  Eric Swab

Eric Swab, a volunteer with the Pike San Isabel National Forest, will walk us around what remains of one of the first Dude Ranches in the Pikes Peak Region, ca 1904 to 1916. He will help you reconstruct in your mind's eye what place must have been with photos and stories that have survived. You will explore the evidence that still exists, even after the site has been harvested for old bottles and ravaged by uncontrolled fuel mitigation. He will ask for your theories about a couple of the unsolved mysteries of the artifacts on the site. The ranch is located in the National Forest about 3 miles west of Woodland Park, at an elevation of about 9,000 feet.
